JRC had the opportunity to join Jennie Webber, a UK based wildlife artist, in a sloth drawing class, who helped raise money for the center.
During the pandemic – without the option of in-person classes – Jennie started to run regular online animal drawing classes, using Zoom to teach groups how to sketch animals from life and use the classes as an opportunity to talk with the handler or the sanctuary to discuss the welfare or conservation of that particular species.
The center set up a playground for the baby sloths so they could film while they were sleeping. Encar founder of the center explained to the class about the sloths and Jennie was helping the participants with the sketch for the sloth. Jennie was so kind to donate half of the income of the class to the center.
“It was such a pleasure to collaborate with Jaguar Rescue for a Wild Life Drawing class. All the attendees back in the UK were very excited to be able to see sloths up close and to draw them from life, and we could feel a little bit of that Costa Rican sunshine brightening our cold January! As an artist, the anatomy and the fur of the sloths were really interesting to draw and it was great to see their natural behaviors. Encar was amazing, so knowledgeable and so many good sloth facts. It was brilliant to hear about the fantastic work the center does for wildlife and we were very happy to support with a donation from the ticket sales.” Jennie.
